Monsoon Hair Fall in Bengaluru: What Seasonal Shedding Is and What It Isn’t

Hair fall rises across Bengaluru as the rains settle in, and the research says the timing is no coincidence. What seasonal shedding actually is, how to tell it apart from breakage, and when it stops being seasonal.

Between the first heavy week of rain and the end of the retreating monsoon, the same conversation repeats across Bengaluru: a handful of hair collected from the shower drain, and the question of whether something has gone wrong. Most people have already been told it is “just the weather”. Some have already bought a water softener.

Seasonal shedding is real and measurable. But “seasonal” is a description, not a diagnosis, and there is a point at which it stops being the explanation.

Seasonal shedding is real, and the data is consistent

Every follicle runs its own cycle: a long growth phase, a short transition, and a resting phase that ends when the old hair is released. At any moment most of your hair is growing and a minority is resting — shedding is the tail end of that cycle becoming visible.

The proportion of resting hairs is not steady across the year. Randall and Ebling, tracking men over 18 months, found telogen proportion and shedding both peaked around September. Kunz and colleagues followed 823 women over six years and found resting hairs highest in July. In both, visible shedding trailed the telogen peak by one to two months.

The pattern holds at population scale. A time-series analysis of Google Trends data in the British Journal of Dermatology found hair-loss searches correlated significantly with season, peaking in summer and autumn in both hemispheres, offset by six months.

One caveat, stated plainly: this evidence comes from temperate populations, not tropical monsoon climates. Bengaluru’s version is a sharp environmental shift — humidity, less sunlight, a season of viral illness — layered over the follicle’s own rhythm.

Why shedding shows up months after its trigger

The most misunderstood fact about diffuse hair fall is the delay. When something pushes a large group of follicles out of growth and into rest — fever, infection, surgery, a crash diet, severe stress, childbirth — those hairs do not fall immediately. They sit in the resting phase and are released later, which is why telogen effluvium typically begins two to four months after the triggering event.

This changes how you read August and September. What you are seeing now was likely set in motion in June or July: a viral fever, a stomach infection, a punishing work quarter, a restrictive diet begun with the rains. The shedding surfaces exactly when the weather is available to take the blame.

Scale matters too. Losing roughly 100 hairs a day is normal; in telogen effluvium a far larger share of follicles shifts into rest and daily loss climbs well above that. It settles once the trigger resolves — but only if the trigger has been identified, the step self-diagnosis skips.

Shedding or breakage? The distinction that changes everything

Before any plan makes sense, one question must be answered: is hair leaving from the root, or snapping along its length? These are different problems, and treating one as the other wastes months. Examine the fallen hairs in good light: a hair shed from the root is full length with a small pale bulb at one end, while a broken hair is shorter, uneven, and has no bulb.

What Bengaluru’s monsoon actually changes

Humidity, sebum and the scalp barrier

Humidity keeps sweat and sebum on the scalp longer, and many people wash less often in the rains because hair takes longer to dry. That combination favours the yeast living naturally on every scalp, producing the flaking, itching and redness of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Persistent scalp inflammation is a plausible amplifier of shedding, which is why scalp health is assessed first. A study of 451 women in Karnataka examined how often seborrheic dermatitis presents alongside other cutaneous and systemic findings — a flaking scalp is rarely isolated. The hard-water question, answered honestly

Bengaluru’s borewell supply is genuinely hard, and calcium and magnesium react with surfactants to leave residue that makes hair feel rough and tangle-prone. What the evidence does not support is the leap from that to root-level loss. Two studies in the International Journal of Trichology disagree: a 2013 study found no significant difference in tensile strength or elasticity between hair treated with hard and distilled water, while a 2018 study found hard water reduced tensile strength by roughly eight per cent. Both were laboratory experiments on strands, not studies of scalps. Read together, hard water is a shaft-and-breakage variable, with no evidence that it pushes follicles into rest. If your ends are snapping, softening the water may help; if your parting is widening, it is not the answer.

Wet hair and the monsoon routine

Hair is most vulnerable when wet, stretching more readily under tension. Tying damp hair back and leaving it tied all day adds sustained traction on a scalp that never fully dries — the most fixable contributor to seasonal breakage.

The triggers hiding behind “monsoon hair fall”

The risk in blaming the season is that something treatable sits underneath.

Iron status. A retrospective review of 2,851 women with telogen effluvium found low serum ferritin in close to half of those tested — the most common abnormality in this group. Ferritin can be low while a routine haemoglobin reading still looks acceptable, which is why the specific test matters.

Thyroid function, vitamin B12 and vitamin D. All three recur in studies of diffuse shedding at rates high enough to justify testing rather than assuming.

Recent illness. The monsoon is fever season, and a viral illness in June is a textbook trigger for shedding in September — a connection almost never made by the person experiencing it.

Hormonal shifts and weight loss. Postpartum shedding, PCOS, thyroid change and rapid dieting all belong here, as does the difference between diffuse shedding and hormonal or pattern hair loss in women.

What is reasonable to do at home

Wash more often, not less. In humid weather a clean scalp is a healthier one, and anti-dandruff shampoo needs contact time rather than an immediate rinse.

Dry the roots, and never tie damp hair. Loosen ponytails and vary where the tension sits rather than pulling from the same points daily.

Avoid improvised remedies on an inflamed scalp. Undiluted lemon, garlic and similar kitchen applications are a recognised cause of irritant contact dermatitis.

Do not self-prescribe iron. Supplementing without testing carries real risk, since iron overload is its own condition.

Collect evidence. Count what you shed on a wash day and photograph your parting monthly in the same light and position — it turns a distressing impression into data your clinician can use.

When it has stopped being seasonal

Seasonal shedding is diffuse, temporary and settles once its trigger resolves. The following are not that pattern, and each warrants an expert scalp examination rather than waiting for the weather to turn: shedding still heavy beyond roughly three months; a parting that keeps widening or a ponytail measurably thinner; scalp visible at the crown or temples; loss in defined patches; itching, pain, scaling or tenderness; smooth shiny areas with no follicular openings; or shedding alongside fatigue, weight change or menstrual irregularity.

Patchy loss and any suggestion of scarring belong in the assess-promptly category, because the window for preserving a follicle is limited.

How a clinical scalp assessment approaches this

The purpose of an assessment is not to sell a protocol. It is to establish which problem you actually have, because diffuse shedding, pattern hair loss, mechanical breakage and inflammatory scalp disease look alike to the person experiencing them and are managed in entirely different ways.

A thorough evaluation works through history and timeline — mapping backwards to the two to four months before shedding began — then examines the scalp and hair shafts under magnification, assesses density and miniaturisation, and adds blood work where the history points to a systemic contributor. What a responsible clinic will not do is promise a timeline. Hair biology does not move to a schedule, and an evidence-based plan is worth more than a confident date.

Does monsoon hair fall reverse on its own?

Diffuse seasonal shedding is a temporary phase of the hair cycle and settles once its trigger resolves. Pattern hair loss does not behave that way, which is why the two need separating by examination rather than by waiting.

How much hair fall is normal during the rains?

Around 100 hairs a day is the usual baseline, and a modest seasonal rise is expected. The trend matters more than the count.

Does Bengaluru hard water cause hair fall?

The evidence is mixed and entirely laboratory-based. Hard water contributes to roughness and breakage along the shaft rather than to hair shed from the root, so it will not explain a widening parting.

Should I take iron or biotin supplements for hair fall?

Not without testing. Low ferritin is common in diffuse shedding, which argues for a blood test rather than blind supplementation, since iron taken when unnecessary carries real risk. Biotin can also interfere with thyroid and cardiac lab results.
